Ashurst Beacon lies near to the Wigan suburb of Orrell and Dalton in Lancashire.
I hadn't been here for over 10 years and after seeing a recent YouTube video I thought I'd pay it a visit and see what kind of a picture I could get. I parked in a dodgy looking car park a few hundred yards past the Beacon Park golf club and plodded up the hill across the road. The Beacon soon came in to view and reminded me of similar looking obelisks like Stoodley Pike or Turton Tower, anyway I looked round a found a suitable position for my camera bag and Tripod. Apparently the Beacon was erected as part of a relay device between Everton and Lancaster Castle, the current structure was built in 1800. A large boulder carrying a plaque illustrating prominent viewing points sits in front of the Beacon so my composition obviously had to include this.In the end I prompted for the boulder being directly in front of the Beacon, initially I went hand held but realized that better camera and filter handling would be gained from using my tripod.
So the details are Canon EOS 5DIII c/w a 24-70 f4 L with a Lee 0.6 grad filter and Lee polarizer filter.
